We have started backpacking with Aberdeen here down in Texas hill country. We do bring a general first aid kit (bandages, cleansing pads, tweezers, anti-biotic ointment etc.) We also have Benadryl and Gas-X to bring. What other items would you suggest we have on hand?

A snake bite kit, a blanket strong enough to carry or drag him in a just incae situation. rubbing alcohol to bring down body temp incase of heat stroke. You may also want to check into purchasing him a good pair of rubber booties just incase you come across a sharp rocks, pineneedle, etc...I think I could think of a million things!!! LOL

Boots would be a good idea.. Have any suggestions of some that would be big enough for a dane? The last pair I got him were a wee bit small and fell off anyway.

I found a pair of boots at the REI in Dallas that were big enough for him. They worked out pretty well on our trip this week. It was quite funny putting them on him for the first time. At first, he was like "what's this on my feet," but after he realized he could get some good traction on the hardwood, he got pretty crazy! He was zooming around the house like a mad man! And, surprisingly the boots stayed on!! It was pretty funny for sure!

We tested out the boots on two trips and they worked very well. Check out our backpacking blog and you can see Aberdeen in action!
