I only wish one of our cats had the guts to stand up to Aberdeen. The cats have come to learn that he can't get to them when he is babygated out of the room, but its hard to keep them seperated all of the time. When we first got Deen, he and the cats were fine, its just now that they run away (probably because of his 100lb gain since puppyhood) he can't help himself but to run after them. I know for sure he wouldn't hurt them (although his paws aren't giant creampuffs either) but they all are none the less terrified of him. We tried sit stay, which he is good at, but its like a switch goes off and no amount of treats (even the really good ones) will get him to listen.

I have found that since Danes generally cannot catch the cats, the cats learn this over time.  Also, a few swats from 1 brave cat and your Dane will think again about cat chasing and the like.

Lucky(our surrogate Dane) ounces and barks, chases, and generally tortures the cats beacuse he is soooo offended that they could care less about playing with him.  I do not believe Danes mean harm, they just want to play.....good luck

As we all know, Aberdeen is my little angel, however my parents cats seem to disagree. He really goes crazy when they are out in the house, trying to get at them. I'm sure he just wants to play, but that cats don's think its very fun to be chased and barked at. They really especially don't like it when Deen bats them with his paws.

My question is, how can I get Aberdeen to stop terrorizing the cats, so that they can come out from hiding when he is there?

Have you tried the "leave It" command with a squirt bottle?

That sounds like a good thing to try next time I am home. Princess Aberdeen does not like the water! I will let you know the results this weekend when we are back home!

I have 2 danes and 1 kitten (he is 8 months old)..... Lockland my female dane treats him like her baby and takes care of him... On Irena's point about the squirt bottle... it works wonders, all 3 aminals now know when they see the bottle to stop what there doing... I love the squirt bottle. The cat stays away from the dogs but will also cuddle with Lockland
